Children in Elkhart County who experience sexual abuse or assault no longer have to travel miles away to get the specialized medical exams and care they need.

A new partnership between Maple City Health Care Center (MCHCC) and CAPS is bringing Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner services also known as SANE directly to our community.

For years, young survivors of abuse and assault had to leave the county for a medical forensic exam which is an essential step for healing, safety, and justice. Now, that care is finally available here.

“Anyone who experiences sexual abuse or assault deserves trauma-informed care in a safe, welcoming environment,” says Elizabeth Diaz, SANE Coordinator at MCHCC. “We’re grateful to partner with CAPS to make that possible for children in our county.”

Through this partnership, children in our community now have access to

  • Compassionate, trauma-informed medical exams

  • Forensic evidence collection

  • Immediate support and follow-up care

  • Services delivered by trained SANEs right here in Elkhart County

The SANE program strengthens CAPS’ services and the work of our Child & Family Advocacy Center (CFAC). With medical forensic exams now part of our response, families get consistent, compassionate care from the first report on. And with MCHCC joining CAPS’ Multidisciplinary Team, young survivors have one fully connected group of medical staff and advocates working together to support them.

Together, MCHCC and CAPS are making it easier for young survivors to get the care needed and the dignity they deserve, right here in Elkhart County.
